William at his death was the last member of one of the oldest families in Richfield. According to his obituary, during his life he paid little attention to charities, but he left the bulk of his estate, $400,000 to Akron City Hospital, Richfield Congregational Church, the Village Cemetery, Cleveland’s YMCA, the Salvation Army, the Toledo YMCA, the American Red Cross and left money to the 12 former employees and assistants on his Richfield farm. He lived modestly, the life of a Farmer, yet had wealth to pursue almost any activity he might choose. He was admitted to the bar, but never practiced Law. He served as Justice of the Peace in his town of Richfield, OH in 1891. In the 1870 Summit County, OH Census Richfield Twp he is 37, living with his wife and 4 sons, his wealth was $17,000 and he was a Dry Goods Merchant. In the 1920 he is age 61 and his son and family lives with him, his occupation is listed as farmer.
